Back To The Future music was blaring out of the car with the occasional burst of smoke from the back (you may remember this from when Doc Brown puts “fuel” in his car).

Once the doors opened, the select crowd of roughly 60 guests made their way up to the second floor, where the usual array of drinks were on offer to help calm the nerves of the fortunate bidders and the rest of us super-fans. Taking pride of place inside the Nike iD studio was what everyone had come for; a 2011 Nike MAG collectors pack, one of only 10 that come in the full presentation box, this being the only pair to land on our fine shores. There was a definite buzz to the room. An unspoken knowledge that we were all here to witness a rather substantial part of sneaker history.

As the tension and excitement rose, people started making their way to the seats, equipped with Back For The Future themed bidding paddles. When everyone was seated, the Nike MAG trailer video was played on the big screen before a personal message of thanks from Michael J. Fox himself, clutching a MAG in one hand. The London MAGs made their way to front of the stage and a very entertaining auctioneer joined them, dressed in a pretty nuts waistcoat. Before the MAG auction began, it was announced that a special ceramic MAG with a signed box by the CEO of Nike would be auctioned first. This helped to up the hype, as no one was expecting it, and was very quickly snapped up for £2,000 after two bidders had a bidding war from £500 upwards.

Then the time came, the moment everyone had been waiting for; the MAGs went on sale. Starting at £1,000, the price quickly rose to £3,000 and hovered there for a little while. It was a bit of an odd occurrence, as most of us thought that they may actually go for as little as £3,000, but the auctioneer did his job far to well and before we knew it we were climbing up the price ladder again. Another bidding war took place between two bidders before they were sold off for £8,000 to the same chap who purchased the signed ceramic (Mr. 1964, as pictured below). It turns out that Mr. 1964 is actually the head buyer from Office and Offspring - an experienced sneaker purchaser, as proven by his bidding skills.

All in all, the event went incredibly smoothly, as predicted, but there didn’t seem to be as much of a desperation to get the pair as I expected, perhaps because this was the last auction, or perhaps because most people’s personal spend limit was surpassed very quickly. It’s a shame to say that that’s the end of the 2011 Nike MAG hype train, but damn has it been a good ride, and I’m honored to have been able to see a pair up close and personal.

Bring on 2015!

<img

I have been inundated with messages from the chorus all saying what a fantastic time they had and that they thought David Palmer was brilliant. He certainly was and it was his expertise that gave us a profit of just over £7,500! It was more than we expected and our musical director is over the moon. We can't thank you both enough. This money will ensure that the musical and educational aims and objectives of the choir can be fulfilled.

Thank you so much for your contribution on Saturday - we really appreciated your support at such short notice and the efforts you made to fit us in with your schedules last weekend. We raised a total of £21,000 which was well above the expected, and are absolutely delighted - so thank you once again.

Wendy [October 2004]

Thank you for making the CEFC auction such fun and so successful. David Palmer did a brilliant job and considering the lots we had, we made a good amount of money. He worked so hard to get money out of the audience for which we are really appreciative. CEFC usually only does an auction once every 2 years, but we'll certainly approach you again for your services.

Thanks for supplying your chaps, overall it was deemed to be a success! Your guys gave our staff lots of pointers that we can change for the next auction. We definately think that the day was more of a success and more enjoyable with professionals at the helm. Hopefully it will be even better the next time!

Thanks for coming up to Alvechurch last night - you livened up the auction and thanks to you we raised almost £1000 more than last year, which is amazing considering there were less people. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for last night. I have no doubt that without you we wouldn't have raised half of what we did. £20,000! Who'd have thought it, our aim was only £6,000. Everyone I have spoken to said what a fantastic personality David had. The auction went on for ages but people didn't get bored in the slightest and that is all down to his skill.

David Palmer was not only a fabulous entertainer and professional auctioneer, but also a very creative influence on the night. I may repeat the event in 2010 and I would like David to do it again.

Just to say how impressed we were with your auctioneer Eddie Crichton on Saturday. He raised us over £2,150 which for a school of only 88 pupils was far more than anticipated. Although I went out on a limb hiring a professional auctioneer for a small event, everyone who attended said how entertaining he was and he was definitely an asset rather than an expense!

Auctioneer Hire Charges - Charity Auctions

Flat rate charge (per session) of £350.00 plus travel/ancilliary expenses (see below)

Auctioneer Hire Charges - General Auctions

We quote individually for each commission.

Our quotations for the hire of an auctioneer depend upon various factors - including location of auction, number of Lots involved, price expectations for Lots, approximate duration of auction, anticipated auction turnover and any specialised auctioneering skills or knowledge required.

Quotations will comprise either a percentage of the total hammer-price proceeds, a flat rate charge, or a percentage of total hammer price proceeds with a guaranteed minimum, whichever is greater.

On average our auctioneer hire fees for a single auction session equate to around 5 percent of the total hammer prices achieved with a £500.00 minimum, plus travel and any subsistence expenses incurred by the auctioneer (see below)

Naturally, where very high turnover expectations are involved, as in certain property and art auctions, lower rates of commission will be quoted

In certain cases, especially in respect of first-time clients, a deposit of at least 10 percent of the agreed auctioneer hire fee will be required in advance.

Auctioneers' Travel & Subsistence Expenses

All the auctioneer's normal travel expenses to and from the auction venue will be to the account of the client

We will always try to minimise travel expenses through provision of the Auction Locum auctioneer located nearest to the auction venue, subject to their suitability to the client's requirements.

In cases where urgency, extreme short notice or remote/difficult access to the auction venue may require out-of-the-ordinary travel arrangements, we will if possible quote for the costs of such arrangements in advance and, in certain circumstances involving substantial travel costs (e.g. private aeroplane or helicopter hire), may require payment of some or all of such costs in advance.

Where the auction duration or location or any other circumstances require the auctioneer to stay one or more nights at the place of auction, normal subsistence costs covering meals and hotel accommodation will be charged to the client in addition to travelling expenses. Wherever possible, these will be quoted and agreed in advance.

Our Charges & Expenses - General Principles

Auction Locum are committed to providing the most cost-effective auctioneer services to our clients under all possible circumstances

By keeping our own business overheads at an absolute minimum, and constantly expanding the range, quality and quantity of our personnel and services, we are able to offer auctioneering support of the highest professional standard that will achieve the best possible returns for all our clients, at what to the best of our knowledge are the most competitive rates available anywhere in the United Kingdom.
